Your Legal Right for a
Free Credit Report
It's hard to imagine that Congress can get anything
right but not too long ago, they amended the Fair Credit Reporting Act
(FCRA) to help consumers including you!
The FCRA requires each of the 3 largest consumer credit reporting
companies &endash; Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion provide you
with a free copy of your credit report. It is not sent automatically.
In other words, you need to request, once every 12 months.
To make the process easy, the three largest consumer credit reporting
companies have set up a centralized web site, a toll-free telephone
number and a mailing address where you can order your free annual
report. You may order your reports from each of the three nationwide
consumer reporting companies at the same time, or you can order your
report from each of the companies one at a time. The law allows you to
order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer
reporting companies every 12 months.

Watch Out for
Lookalike Web Sites
There are other commercial web sites which claim to offer "free credit
reports" or "free credit scores," but are not part of the legally
mandated free annual credit report program. In certain circumstances,
the "free" product comes with strings attached. For example, some web
sites want you to sign you up for a supposedly "free" service that
converts to one you have to pay for after a trial period. If you don't
cancel during the trial period, you may be unwittingly agreeing to let
the company start charging fees to your credit card.
Your Credit Score is NOT Included with a Free Annual
Credit Report
Want to know your score? The Annual Free Credit Report.com service does
not disclose your credit score for free, nor is it required to be
discolsed by law. Therefore, the web site Annual Credit Report will
charge you an additional fee to see what your credit core actually is.
This is an optional service and is not required to see what exactly is
in your credit profile.
